All About Rose

Rose gardens aren't usually my thing, but All About Rose near Tring genuinely stopped me in my tracks. It's a proper working rose nursery where you can actually see the plants being grown rather than just walking round manicured beds like a theme park. The whole operation revolves around heritage and modern rose varieties, and the owners clearly know their stuff - conversations with staff here aren't the polite fob-off you get at bigger attractions.

You'll want to allow a couple of hours if you're genuinely interested in roses. Keen gardeners will spend longer; casual browsers maybe 45 minutes. The best time to visit is late spring through early autumn when there's actual colour and fragrance rather than bare stems. Photography enthusiasts should come before midday for proper light on the blooms.

It works brilliantly as a half-day excursion from any of the nearby glamping sites. Lights Camera Glamping is barely 4 miles away, and Hill Farm Camping just over 5. You could easily combine a morning here with Tring itself - the town's got decent pubs and the Natural History Museum is worth an hour if the weather turns. The Chilterns round here are walking country, so it slots nicely into a longer week where you're mixing activity with downtime.

Not one for young kids unless they're genuinely interested in horticulture, but for anyone with even a passing interest in gardens or growing things, this beats the chain attractions hollow. Honest and unpretentious.
