Alkrington Woods Nature Reserve

Alkrington Woods is a proper slice of ancient woodland just outside Bury, the kind of place where you can actually lose yourself without needing a map app. The reserve spreads across decent acreage with a network of paths threading through oak and birch, and there's genuine wildlife about if you're patient - woodpeckers, nuthatches, the works. It's less manicured than a country park, which makes it feel more like an adventure than a Sunday stroll.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The paths aren't signposted to death, so there's a real sense of exploration, though nothing so wild you'd get properly lost. Families with kids who actually enjoy a bit of woodland rather than a playground will find it engaging, but don't expect facilities or designated spots. Bring proper shoes if there's been rain - it can turn muddy fast.

It's ideal as a morning outing if you're based at Burrs Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite nearby. That's far enough away to feel like a proper expedition but near enough for an easy drive. Allow two hours to properly wander without rushing. Spring is best for birdsong and wildflowers; autumn if you want that crisp, golden-light feeling.

There's no charge to access the woods and no formal opening hours that anyone seems to know about. It's the kind of place that rewards curiosity over convenience.
