Alderley Edge

The sandstone ridge rising out of the Cheshire plain is impossible to miss once you're in the area around Macclesfield. Alderley Edge climbs to just under 500 metres, and the views across the countryside from the top justify every minute of the walk up. On a clear day you can see right across to the Welsh hills - properly stunning.

It's accessible enough for most walkers, with several paths crisscrossing the wooded slopes. The main route from the village side takes about 45 minutes to reach the summit, though you can potter about for hours if you fancy it. The trees are thick in places, which means it's lovely and cool even on warm days. Bring proper footwear though - the paths get muddy and a bit slippery after rain.

Families with older children will get the most from it. Younger kids might find the walk tedious, but there's enough woodland to explore and scramble about in to keep them occupied. History buffs should know the Edge has copper mines dating back centuries - there are old shafts and entrances dotted about, though they're fenced off now for safety.

It's free to wander, which is the best part. Allow two to three hours if you want to take your time and sit at the top with a flask. If you're staying at Sycamore Farm Caravan Site or Eastwood End just down the road, this is an obvious choice for a morning out before heading back for lunch. The car park near the village fills up quickly on weekends, so go early or mid-week.
