Afon Leri

The Afon Leri is a river that cuts through Ceredigion's landscape just outside Aberystwyth, and it's one of those places that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick stop. The river itself is the draw here - it flows through wooded valleys with decent walking paths alongside, offering views that shift depending on the light and season. You'll find yourself among ancient woodlands where the water moves over rocks and creates small pools, particularly satisfying after rainfall when the flow picks up.

This is ideal terrain for walkers rather than coach-trip tourists. Families with older kids will get on fine if they're happy to stretch their legs for an hour or so; younger ones might lose patience without a specific destination in mind. The river's close enough to Aberystwyth that you can incorporate it into a broader day out, and it's a natural fit if you're staying at any of the nearby parks like Aber Camping or Searivers Caravan Park - both are within five miles and make sensible bases for exploring the Ceredigion coast.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. The best approach is to treat it as a walking destination rather than a destination in itself. Pick a section of riverside path, follow it upstream or downstream, and let the woodland do the work. It's free, it's accessible, and it genuinely beats fighting crowds at honeypot attractions. The river's at its most interesting in autumn or after wet weather, when water levels are higher and the light filters differently through the trees.
