Aelwyd Uchaf Barrows

You'll find yourself walking across moorland north of Rhyl to reach these Bronze Age barrows - there's no visitor centre, no signage, just you and a couple of low earth mounds that have sat undisturbed for roughly 4,000 years. Aelwyd Uchaf consists of two burial mounds on open ground, and the walk to them is honestly more rewarding than the site itself. The landscape rolls away toward the coast, and on a clear day you're looking at decent views across Conwy.

It's the sort of place archaeology enthusiasts actually enjoy - no crowds, no admission fees, no gift shop. You'll need an ordnance survey map or decent GPS to find it properly, and allow a good hour if you're combining it with a proper walk across the moorland. The barrows themselves are modest earthworks; don't expect dramatic stone circles or anything obvious. This is about standing where Bronze Age people buried their dead and trying to imagine what that landscape meant to them.

Families with young children might find it underwhelming after the initial walk gets old. But if you're into prehistory or you're staying at Golden Sands Holiday Park down in Rhyl and fancy a proper moorland ramble with a bit of archaeological interest, it's worth the effort. Go on a dry day - the ground gets boggy. Summer's best when the light holds longer and you can actually see where you're walking.
