Adam Smith

The Adam Smith cottage in Kirkcaldy (just inland from Kinghorn) is a modest stone building that's easy to miss if you're not looking for it. This is where Scotland's most influential economist was born in 1723, and it's the kind of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick tick-off.

Inside, you'll find period furnishings and displays about Smith's life - his time at Glasgow and Oxford universities, his friendship with David Hume, and the ideas that eventually became The Wealth of Nations. It's not flashy, but there's something rather moving about standing in the rooms where one of history's sharpest minds spent his childhood. The building itself, with its creaky floors and low doorways, gives you a real sense of 18th-century domestic life.

This isn't a day-long attraction. Give it an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're genuinely interested in economic philosophy or Scottish intellectual history. History types and academics will find it worthwhile; families with restless kids might struggle. The cottage is free to enter, which helps, and you'll usually have the place fairly quiet.

It works well as part of a broader exploration of Fife's coastal towns. Kinghorn itself is just down the road with good caravan parks - Kinghorn Harbour Holiday Park is particularly handy - and you can easily combine this with walks along the Fife coastal path or a visit to nearby Kirkcaldy's other attractions. Go on a clear day when you can appreciate the views across the Forth.
