Acres Down

Rolling heath and gorse stretches as far as you can see from this modest New Forest hilltop, just outside Lyndhurst. Acres Down isn't exactly a mountain - more of a gentle rise that rewards the short walk with surprisingly good views across the forest canopy.

Families with younger children will find the approach manageable, though the boggy ground after rain makes proper walking boots essential. The summit itself is unmarked, so you'll need to judge for yourself when you've reached the highest point. Worth it for the panoramic sweep of woodland and heath, particularly on clear days when you can make out the distant coast.

Dog walkers love this spot - plenty of space for energetic hounds to run free among the heather. Cyclists often stop here too, using it as a waypoint on longer forest rides.

Timing matters. Early morning visits avoid the crowds and catch the best light, while autumn brings spectacular colours to the surrounding heathland. Allow an hour for a leisurely walk up and back, longer if you fancy exploring the surrounding tracks.

Staying at nearby Ocknell or Longbeech campsites? This makes a lovely evening stroll after setting up camp. The walk from Matley Wood or Hollands Wood campsites takes you through some of the New Forest's finest scenery, making Acres Down a natural stopping point rather than a destination in itself.
