Achadun Castle

The ruins of Achadun Castle sit on a rocky outcrop near Oban, commanding views across Loch Etive that make the short scramble to reach them worthwhile. What remains is modest - crumbling walls of a 13th-century fortress that once belonged to the MacDougall clan - but the setting is dramatic enough to justify the detour.

You'll want proper footwear and a bit of nerve for the final approach. The castle itself won't occupy you for long, perhaps thirty minutes unless you're into sketching stonework, but the walk rewards you with genuine Highland scenery rather than manicured views.
