Aberlady Bay Local Nature Reserve

The mudflats and salt marshes of Aberlady Bay sprawl across the Firth of Forth's southern shore like something half-finished by the tide. It's a working nature reserve, not a manicured visitor attraction - the kind of place where you're sharing space with oystercatchers and curlews rather than queuing for a photo opportunity.

You'll walk here rather than do much else. There's a decent coastal path that loops around the bay, taking you past reed beds and scrubby grassland where you can actually spot things if you're patient. Bring binoculars if you're serious about birdwatching - the reserve pulls in serious numbers during migration periods. The best light hits in late afternoon when the mudflats turn silvery and the whole place feels properly wild.

It's free, obviously. Allow a couple of hours for a proper wander, though you can knock out a quick 40-minute circuit if time's tight. Spring and autumn bring the most interesting birds. Winter's dramatic if you like moody skies and solitude.

If you're based at Haven Seton Sands just down the coast, this is an easy escape from the holiday park bubble - proper East Lothian countryside without driving far. The nearby village of Aberlady has a few cafes for when you've had enough wind in your face. Not a destination in itself, but a genuine reason to spend an afternoon outdoors if you're in the area.
