Abaty Cymer

The ruins of Abaty Cymer sit in a proper quiet corner of the Coed y Brenin forest, about three miles north of Dolgellau. What you're looking at are the remains of a Cistercian monastery founded in 1198 - mainly the church, some walls, and scattered stonework that tells you just enough to imagine what life was like here seven centuries ago.

It's a short walk from the car park through woodland, which is half the appeal. The site itself won't take long to explore - maybe thirty minutes unless you're the type to sit with a sketch pad and contemplate monastic life for hours. Historically minded visitors will get the most from this. Families with younger kids might find it a bit sparse compared to the better-maintained sites - there's no visitor centre, no interactive bits, just the archaeology itself. That's either brilliant or disappointing depending on your patience for ruins.

Pair it with a walk through the forest itself, which is extensive and well-signposted.
