Football crowds cheer from Oliver Cromwell Stadium most Saturday afternoons, but this Cambridgeshire market town feels wonderfully unhurried the rest of the week. Ancient streets wind down from the medieval parish church towards the Great Ouse, where narrow boats chug past converted warehouses and the occasional heron stands motionless in the shallows.

The town centre keeps its old-fashioned charm intact. Independent shops line the high street, though it's admittedly quiet on weekday mornings. What St. Ives lacks in grand attractions, it makes up for in gentle countryside pleasures. The Raptor Foundation makes for a proper family day out - their birds of prey displays are genuinely impressive, and the kids love the flying demonstrations.

Countryside walks thread through Pingle Wood and Warboys Wood, both lovely spots for an afternoon ramble. Warboys Airfield Memorial tells a sobering wartime story, while the various village signs dotted around - Pidley cum Fenton and Warboys among them - showcase local pride in these Fenland communities.

Water features heavily here. Beyond the river, Pidley Hoss Pond offers peaceful fishing, while Warboys Weir provides decent wildlife watching. The surrounding fens stretch endlessly - big skies, drainage channels, and that distinctive flat landscape that grows on you.

Huntingdon lies just eight miles south via the A141, making St. Ives easily accessible by car. The railway station closed decades ago, so driving remains your best bet.
