Rochester Castle dominates the skyline, its 12th-century walls rising from the river like something from a fairy tale. Getting here couldn't be easier - trains from London Victoria take just 35 minutes, making Rochester a popular day trip. But staying longer reveals the town's quieter charms: early morning mist over the Medway, empty castle grounds before the coach parties arrive, and proper Kentish pub dinners in The Eagle or The Crown.

With holiday parks scattered around the Medway Towns and Isle of Sheppey, Rochester serves as an ideal launching pad for exploring both historic Kent and the Thames Estuary's wilder edges. The contrast between medieval streets and marshland nature reserves is pure Kent at its most varied.
