The smell of diesel and the rumble of lorries might not scream 'holiday destination', but Leyland sits at the heart of Lancashire's most overlooked corner. This is proper working England - home to the famous truck manufacturer that put the town on the map, though these days it's more about residential streets and retail parks than industrial heritage.

What Leyland lacks in obvious tourist appeal, it makes up for in location. You're bang in the middle of some cracking countryside, with Harrock Hill offering decent views across the Lancashire plains when the weather's on your side. Hunter's Wood and Black Field Plantation provide proper walks without the crowds you'd find further south. The disused windmill hints at older times, though frankly it's seen better days.

Yarrow Valley Country Park, just down the road, is where families head for weekend walks. It's well-maintained and the kids love it, even if it gets busy on sunny Saturdays. More interesting is Bobby The Iron Horse gallery - an unexpected find that showcases local artists and occasionally puts on decent exhibitions.

Transport links are spot-on here. The M6 runs past the edge of town, and you've got Preston just fifteen minutes north for proper shopping and dining. Euxton Balshaw Lane station connects you to the wider rail network without too much fuss.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense if you're touring this part of Lancashire. You're close enough to Preston for city breaks, within striking distance of the Ribble Valley's prettier villages, and the West Pennine Moors aren't far when you fancy proper hiking. It's not glamorous, but it's genuinely useful as a base.
