Black and white Tudor buildings line the streets like something from a film set, their timber frames telling stories of medieval prosperity built on wool and leather. Leominster feels properly old - not theme park heritage, but the real deal where people have lived and worked for centuries.

The priory church of St Mary dominates the skyline, its Norman stones weathered but defiant. Worth climbing up to the Church of St Mary Belfry for views across the Herefordshire hills that roll away like green waves. Down in the town centre, the Old Chapel Gallery showcases local artists in what was once a Victorian Methodist chapel - quite a transformation.

Just outside town, Dunkertons Cider Mill offers tastings of proper Herefordshire scrumpy. The orchards here stretch for miles, heavy with apples come autumn. Westonbury Mill Water Gardens provides a peaceful wander through landscaped pools and streams, though it's a bit of a trek from the town centre.

Sherrington Wood makes for decent walking when the weather's kind, with footpaths threading between oak and ash trees. The countryside here is classic Welsh border territory - soft hills, scattered farms, and that sense of being properly away from it all.

Getting here means driving really, though Titley Junction offers limited rail connections for the determined. Hereford lies fifteen miles south if you need proper shops or nightlife. The surrounding area works brilliantly as a base for exploring the Wye Valley and Welsh borders - close enough to Hay-on-Wye for literary festivals, but far enough from crowds to feel like you've found somewhere special. Several holiday parks dot the countryside nearby, making it easy to wake up among the apple orchards and plan day trips to Ludlow or the Brecon Beacons.
