Burntisland

The town sits snugly between rolling hills and the Firth of Forth, making it brilliant for both beach days and hill walking. Dunearn Hill and The Binn offer cracking views without being too much of a slog, while Orrock Hill rewards the effort with panoramic vistas across the water. Each peak has its own personality - some grassy, others more rugged.

Down in town, the Museum of Communication is a proper little find, packed with vintage radios and telecommunications kit that'll fascinate anyone interested in how we used to talk to each other. The high street keeps things simple but does the job, and the harbour area still feels like a working port rather than a tourist trap.

Getting here couldn't be easier - Burntisland train station puts you right in the heart of things, with regular services from Edinburgh taking just 40 minutes. The surrounding countryside is dotted with woods like Bairns Bridge Wood and Target Wood, perfect for afternoon rambles when you've had enough sun and sand.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into town for fish and chips or a pint, but far enough out to enjoy the peace of the Fife countryside. Plus, you've got easy access to both the coast and those walking hills - proper best of both worlds territory.
