Castle Hill

The walk up Castle Hill from Burntisland takes about twenty minutes and rewards you with proper views across the Firth of Forth towards Edinburgh. It's not a mountain - more a modest bump on the landscape - but the effort is minimal and the payoff is genuine.

On a clear day you'll clock the Forth bridges stretched out to the west, and if you're lucky the city skyline comes into focus beyond. The summit itself is bare and windswept, nothing fancy, but that's rather the point. There's a trig point marking the top and the kind of view that makes you understand why folk have bothered with this spot for centuries.

This is a walker's half-hour rather than a destination that'll keep you occupied all afternoon. Families with younger kids will manage the ascent without complaint - the path is straightforward and not particularly steep - but they might find the summit itself a touch underwhelming. Serious hikers will pocket this as a quick option between other activities, or as a warm-up for exploring more of Fife's coastal stretches.

If you're based at Pettycur Bay Holiday Park or Sandhills Caravan Park nearby, it slots in perfectly as a morning excursion before heading down to the beach. Burntisland itself has a pleasant waterfront worth a wander, and the castle hill works best as part of a bigger day rather than a standalone trip. Go when the weather's decent - the wind can bite up there and cloud cover makes the whole thing rather pointless.
