Atherstone

Ancient Roman roads still carve through this market town where the Coventry Canal meanders past Victorian terraces. Atherstone sits at the crossroads of Leicestershire and Warwickshire, technically in Leicestershire but very much its own beast. The High Street feels proper old England - independent shops, traditional pubs, and that slightly sleepy midweek vibe that makes it perfect for escaping the M42 madness just miles away.

Roman legions once tramped through here too. Manduvessedum Roman Station marks where they built a fort, though these days you'll find more dog walkers than centurions. The surrounding countryside rolls away in all directions - Sheepy Wood and Orton Wood offer proper woodland walks, while Arbury Hall provides a grand architectural fix if you fancy something more refined.

Water features heavily here. Trout Pond draws anglers year-round, while Claypool and Stubbs Pool offer quieter spots for contemplation. The canal towpath makes for lovely evening strolls, especially when the light catches the water just right.

Getting here couldn't be easier - the A5 runs right through town, and you're only twenty minutes from Nuneaton if you need proper shopping or transport links. Birmingham's close enough for day trips but far enough away to feel rural.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're ideally placed for both the Leicestershire countryside and easy access to Warwickshire's attractions, while Atherstone itself provides all the essentials without the tourist crowds that plague more famous market towns.
