The water at Claypool sits perfectly still most days, surrounded by trees that have watched over it for centuries. It's a proper working lake in Leicestershire, not some manicured attraction - which means it feels genuine, a bit rough round the edges, but all the better for it.

You come here to walk the perimeter, maybe cast a line if you're into fishing, or simply stand and stare at the reflections. The banks are accessible enough, though waterlogged in winter, and the whole circuit takes about forty minutes at a leisurely pace. It's the sort of place where you'll see kingfishers if you're lucky and patient - early morning works best for that.

For families, honestly, it's not a destination in itself. Kids will get bored after half an hour unless they're genuinely keen on birdwatching or fishing. But walkers doing a longer loop through the area will appreciate it. History types might be interested - old industrial ponds around here have their own story - though there's not much interpretation on site.

Atherstone, the nearest town, is about three miles away and worth a poke around. If you're based at Lime Tree Caravan Park or Ettie's Field nearby, Claypool makes a pleasant morning outing to stretch your legs. Free access as far as I'm aware, no facilities to speak of, so come prepared. Go midweek if you want it quiet. It's the sort of spot that rewards a low-key approach rather than expectations of drama.
