Deep in the slate mines around Blaenau Ffestiniog, someone had the crackling idea of putting a golf course underground. Zip World Underground Golf is exactly what it sounds like - nine holes of proper miniature golf carved into caverns that were mined for slate generations ago. The setting is surreal. You're playing through tunnels lit by moody lighting, past underground waterfalls and over improvised bridges, all 200 feet beneath the Welsh hills. It's daft in the best way.

The course itself isn't taxing - it's a laugh more than a genuine challenge - but that's rather the point. Families absolutely lap it up, especially kids who think anything underground is inherently brilliant. Adults tend to enjoy the novelty and the sheer peculiarity of the thing. You're looking at maybe 45 minutes to an hour for a round, depending on how much time you waste examining the old mine workings.

It works perfectly as part of a wider Blaenau Ffestiniog adventure. The town's famous for its mining heritage, and Zip World runs several attractions across the area. If you're staying at Llechwedd Glamping just down the road, or camping at Llyn Gwynant, this fits neatly into a day's schedule. Bring a torch if you've got one - the caves can be dingy, and it adds to the atmosphere. Fair warning though: it's not going to occupy you for an entire afternoon, so pair it with Zip World's other offerings or a proper walk in Snowdonia if you want a full day out.
