YWT Sherburn Willows Nature Reserve

The willows here are massive. Proper old specimens that line the water channels and create these wonderful corridors of shade - exactly the sort of place you'd expect to find kingfishers, and you often do. YWT Sherburn Willows, just outside Selby, is a working nature reserve that actually feels purposeful rather than manicured, which is refreshing.

It's a straightforward spot: wetland habitat with viewing areas where you can stand quietly and watch what turns up. Bring binoculars. The birdwatching is genuinely good, especially in spring and autumn when migrants filter through. You'll see warblers, teal, shoveler ducks, and if you're lucky, spotted woodpeckers. The paths are easy-going, nothing strenuous, so it works for families with younger kids, though you'll need patience - this isn't a theme park experience.

Allow an hour minimum, two if you're serious about birds. Early morning is always better. It's free to visit, which counts in its favour.

If you're staying at either York South Ltd or Cawood Park - both excellent bases within 6 miles - this makes a solid half-day excursion between exploring the market towns and bigger attractions. It won't take over your whole afternoon, but it's the sort of place that genuinely rewards you sitting still for twenty minutes. The reserve is proper Yorkshire working landscape, no tourist gloss, just habitat and wildlife. That's rather the point.
