Young Plantation

A proper woodland walk rather than a tourist trap, Young Plantation sits just outside Salisbury and delivers exactly what it says on the tin - trees, quiet, and space to think. The forest floor is dense with beech and oak, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself breathe after twenty minutes in the car park at Salisbury Cathedral. There's no visitor centre, no café, no gift shop selling ceramic owls. Just you and the woodland.

Walkers will get the most from this. Bring proper boots - it's muddy even in summer - and allow a solid hour to potter through without rushing. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes, but teenagers and dog owners will love it. The paths are well-trodden enough to follow, though a map helps. There's a sense of being genuinely away from things, which is rare this close to a market town.

The real draw is the walk as a walk rather than a destination. You won't find a viewpoint or a folly or anything Instagram-friendly. What you will find is that particular peace that only comes from being among old trees for a bit.
