Heath Hill

The walk up Heath Hill rewards you with proper views across the Wiltshire chalklands - wide, rolling countryside that stretches far enough to make the climb feel worthwhile. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch, but on a clear day you can see the cathedral spire in Salisbury from the top, which gives you something concrete to aim for.

The route is straightforward. Most people approach from the Salisbury side, following paths that wind through scrubland and short grass. The ascent takes about forty minutes without breaking a sweat, making it ideal for walkers who want a proper walk without committing to anything serious. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the exposed ground a bit monotonous.

There's nothing commercial up here - no café, no facilities, just you and the view. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light hits the landscape properly. Summer can be blisteringly hot with minimal shade, so bring water. Winter's often clearer for visibility, though wind gets properly fierce.

Staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Coombe Caravan Park is closest at 3.6 miles, with Salisbury Camping and Caravanning Club Site and Marshwood Farm Camping also within easy reach - gives you a solid base for exploring the wider area. The Wiltshire downlands have plenty of walking routes threading through them, and Stonehenge is within striking distance if you fancy a day out. Heath Hill itself is free, naturally, and you can be up and down in an afternoon.
