Yorkshire Sculpture Park

You'll spend a good half-day wandering through 120 acres of Yorkshire parkland where massive bronze heads and abstract sculptures emerge from the grass like something from a fever dream. Yorkshire Sculpture Park, just outside Barnsley, is genuinely one of the better reasons to find yourself in South Yorkshire - not because it's twee or Instagram-friendly, but because the art actually makes you stop and stare.

The scale is what gets you. Henry Moore's pieces are properly monumental, and seeing a Magdalena Abakanowicz figure of a woman frozen mid-stride across an open field hits different to seeing the same work in a gallery. You're walking, not queuing. The landscape does half the work for you.

It's free entry, which seems mad given the quality, though there's a modest charge if you want the grounds cafe or special exhibitions. Allow two to three hours minimum, longer if you're actually keen on contemporary art. Winter's brilliant - fewer visitors, better light on the sculptures. Summer gets rammed with school groups, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if you've got kids in tow, but it does kill the contemplative bit.

If you're based at one of the caravan sites round Mapplewell or Broad Close Farm, it's a genuine anchor for a week rather than a quick stop. Pairs well with a walk round nearby Cannon Hall or a poke round Barnsley's old town centre, though neither will thrill you as much as standing in front of a Moore bronze watching the clouds move behind it.
