Cannon Hall Country Park

The grounds at Cannon Hall sprawl across 70 acres of proper South Yorkshire countryside just outside Barnsley, mixing formal gardens with woodland walks and open parkland. It's free to wander around, which immediately puts it ahead of some attractions. You get a working farm with animals, a museum housed in the hall itself, and enough space to lose an afternoon without feeling rushed.

For families with younger kids, the farm bit is the main draw - there are alpacas, sheep, and the sort of animals children actually care about. Walkers will find decent paths threading through the grounds, though nothing particularly demanding. The hall itself contains furniture and decorative arts if you're into that sort of thing, and the woodland sections are peaceful enough, but don't expect anything dramatic.

It's the sort of place that works well as a half-day stop rather than a destination in itself. Pack a picnic, let the kids run around the fields, have a look at the gardens if the weather's decent. The nearby campsites - Broad Close Farm and High Lea Farm are both within a couple of miles - make it easy to base yourself in the area. If you're camping at any of them, you've got Cannon Hall as a reliable option for a morning or early afternoon without burning a hole in your budget.
