York Plantation

A dense woodland walk just outside Brough that's far more rewarding than the name 'plantation' might suggest. York Plantation is genuine forest - proper tall trees, winding paths, and the kind of quiet you don't often find near a market town. The whole thing feels older than its name implies, with established woodland that's clearly been here for decades.

It's excellent for a solid hour's ramble, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking it slowly and spotting birds. Walkers will appreciate the network of paths through the trees, though surfaces can be muddy after rain - come prepared. Families with young legs will find it engaging enough without being as demanding as some of the larger North York Moors walks. The canopy cover means it's particularly good on those bright, hot days when you need some shade.

No visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring water and plan accordingly. Free to access as far as I could establish, though details are sparse online - best to ring ahead if you're making a special trip. The real value is as a warm-up walk if you're staying at William's Den or Cherry Burton Leisure Park nearby. It won't take your whole day, but it's exactly what you want when you need a break from the park itself without driving far.
