York City Walls

Walking the full circuit of York's medieval walls is one of those rare experiences that actually lives up to the hype. You're not just strolling along some restored stone path - you're literally treading the same route that defended the city for nearly 2,000 years, with views that shift from timber-framed Georgian houses to the unmistakable bulk of the Minster.

The walls run for roughly two miles, and most people complete the full loop in an hour, though you'll want longer if you stop for photos. The whole thing is flat and well-maintained, which makes it manageable for families with younger kids - though toddlers might struggle with the pace. It's genuinely free and accessible from multiple points around the city centre.

Go early morning or in the shoulder seasons if you can stomach it. Summer afternoons see the walls heaving with tourists, and you lose the contemplative bit of it. Winter's actually rather lovely - quieter, with that low-angle light that makes the old stonework properly dramatic.

If you're based at Wagtail Park or Nurseries Caravan Park, both just a few miles outside York, the walls are an obvious half-day outing that slots neatly between exploring the Minster or checking out the city's maze of medieval streets. It's solid, unpretentious stuff - no entry fees, no queues, just medieval engineering and decent views. Hard to fault it really.
