Yoden medieval settlement

Yoden's a proper archaeological dig that gives you a genuine sense of what medieval life looked like in County Durham - no reconstructions, no theatrics, just the actual remains of a settlement that people abandoned centuries ago. You're walking through field remnants of stone foundations, ditches, and the ghostly outline of what was once someone's home. The site sits near Peterlee, about half an hour from the coast, and it's the kind of place that rewards a bit of effort and imagination.

This isn't Hadrian's Wall or Durham Cathedral. There's no visitor centre, no café, no hand-holding. You need to actually care about medieval archaeology to get anything from it - the romance is in piecing together how folk lived here, what the settlement tells you about land use and community structure. History enthusiasts and walkers will find it worthwhile; families with young kids looking for something interactive will likely find it a bit bleak and hard to visualise.

The nearest holiday parks - The Barn at Easington and Castledene Holiday Park are both within a couple of miles, making it an easy morning or afternoon excursion from a week's caravan stay. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're properly exploring the field boundaries and taking notes. Best visited in dry weather; boggy after rain. Free access as far as I'm aware, though confirmation with Peterlee tourist office wouldn't hurt. It's the sort of place that makes sense as part of a broader County Durham circuit rather than a destination in itself.
