Yate Common

There's something oddly compelling about Yate Common - it's not flashy or manicured, just honest woodland and open grassland on the edge of Gloucestershire. You get a proper sense of what the landscape looked like before everything was farmed to death.

It's a nature reserve, so expect to do some gentle walking through mixed woodland with the occasional clearing. The paths are manageable rather than spectacular, and it's the kind of place where you might actually spot something - adders, if you're lucky, or common birds nesting in the scrubby bits. There's real wildlife here because it's been left relatively alone.

This works well for family walks if your kids can manage uneven ground without complaining for forty minutes. It's also decent for anyone interested in woodland ecology - the mix of habitats means genuine ecological interest rather than just a pretty stroll. Birdwatchers will appreciate it, especially in spring and early autumn.

There's no visitor centre or café - it's genuinely wild in that unglamorous British way. Allow two to three hours if you're taking your time. It slots perfectly into a holiday at Wixoldbury Farm Glamping, just over three miles away, as a morning walk before settling in for the afternoon. Being close to Wotton-under-Edge means you can combine it with the town itself if you need shops or lunch options.

It won't thrill everyone, but if you want to experience actual semi-natural habitat rather than a country park, it's worth the detour.
