Y Ro Wen

The walk up Y Ro Wen from Blaenau Ffestiniog is steep and relentless, but the reward at 2,477 feet is genuinely impressive. You're looking at serious Snowdonian views from the summit - the kind of panorama that makes you understand why people drive hours to stand on Welsh peaks. The route itself isn't a tourist trap, which is refreshing. You won't find a cafe or a gift shop, just fell walker types and serious hill climbers.

The ascent takes about an hour and a half depending on fitness, following a clear path that cuts through moorland and scree. It's properly exposed in places, so not ideal for toddlers or anyone nervous of heights, but teenagers and adults looking for a genuine mountain experience will find it worthwhile. The views stretch across to Snowdon on clear days - proper cracking sight. You're allowed to roam freely here, so there's no entrance fee or timed slots to faff about with.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glampsites - Llechwedd Glamping at Plas Weunydd is closest at just over three miles away - this makes a solid afternoon out. Llyn Gwynant Campsite, six miles down the road, also puts you within easy striking distance. Factor in two to three hours for the full round trip including time to sit and stare at the views. Leave early if you want good light and avoid the peak tourist season when the paths get rammed. It's not for casual ambles, but walkers will find it authentic and properly rewarding.
