Y Moelydd

The walk up Y Moelydd rewards you with proper 360-degree views across the Tanat Valley - on a clear day you can pick out the ridgelines of Snowdonia to the north. It's a modest hill by Welsh standards, nothing that'll take your breath away physically, but the vantage point is genuinely worth the leg work if you're based in or around Llanymynech.

Family groups will manage this fine; it's not a technical scramble, just a steady climb through moorland. Expect to spend two hours there and back without pushing it. History buffs might find the earthwork remains interesting - there's an Iron Age fort up here, though it takes some imagination to read the landscape. The views matter more than what's underfoot.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots. Tanat Holiday Park and Sweeney Farm Glamping are both just over two miles away, making it an ideal afternoon expedition. Fairhaven, a few miles further, is still within easy reach. The walk breaks up a holiday nicely without requiring a long drive to some famous viewpoint.

Go in late afternoon for the best light. Morning can feel a bit flat if clouds roll in from the west. There's no visitor infrastructure up here, so bring water and decent boots. The moorland gets boggy in places after rain, which is most of the time in Wales.
