Wyre Estuary Country Park

The Wyre Estuary isn't flashy. It's a proper working landscape where the river meets the sea near Poulton-le-Fylde, and that's exactly what makes it worth visiting. You get salt marshes, mudflats, and if the timing's right, wading birds picking through the shallows like they own the place - because they do.

This is a nature reserve that demands a pair of decent wellies and low expectations about facilities. There are walking trails threading through the marshland, and the light here changes everything throughout the day. Morning mist, late afternoon gold - it shifts the whole mood of the place. You won't find a visitor centre or a café, which sounds like a drawback until you realise it means the place hasn't been sanitised into something unrecognisable.

Birders absolutely live for this spot. The estuary pulls in everything from greenshanks to godwits depending on the season, and serious twitchers make pilgrimages here. Families with older kids who enjoy a proper ramble will get something out of it too, though you'll lose younger ones after twenty minutes of muddy trudging.

If you're based at Bowses Hill Farm or one of the other nearby campsites - and there are plenty dotted around the area - this works as a morning or late-afternoon venture rather than an all-day thing. Allow two hours maximum. Best visited during autumn migration when the bird activity peaks, or early spring when nesting birds are active. It's free, it's local, and it's undeniably Lancashire.
