Wybunbury Moss

You'll find Wybunbury Moss just outside Nantwich, a proper wetland reserve that feels like stepping into a different world. The place is managed by Cheshire Wildlife Trust and it's genuinely one of those spots where you notice the silence first - no traffic noise, just birdsong and the occasional rustle of reeds.

It's a working nature reserve, not a manicured country park, so don't expect clear paths everywhere. There are some boardwalks threading through the sphagnum moss and wet woodland, which keep your feet dry enough. The main draw is the wildlife. Dragonflies in summer, overwintering birds in autumn, and if you're lucky you'll spot deer. The wetland ecosystem here is properly intact - it's one of the few places in Cheshire where you get a real sense of what the landscape looked like centuries ago.

Walkers will get the most from this. You can spend an hour wandering the trails or just sit by the water with binoculars. Kids might find it a bit too quiet if they're expecting a playground, but those keen on nature spotting will love it. The light in the early morning is particularly good for photography.

Admission is free, managed by volunteers. Spring and early summer are best - the wildflowers are exceptional. If you're staying at The Willows Touring Park or Tipsy Tree Glamping nearby, it's easily combined with other walks around the Nantwich area. Allow a good two hours if you want to do it properly.
