About WWT Washington
The reserve covers a proper chunk of ground - enough to spend a solid three hours here if you're keen, or grab a decent hour if you're passing through. There are hides dotted around the wetland pools where you'll clock everything from pintails and shovelers in winter to breeding warblers come spring. The paths are well-maintained and mostly flat, which means families with younger kids can manage most of it without complaint. Binoculars are non-negotiable though; you won't see much otherwise.
It's the sort of place that genuinely rewards patience. Sit still in one of the hides for twenty minutes and things start happening. In winter the numbers are staggering - thousands of birds using the reserve as a stopover. Summer is quieter but the breeding birds are worth the visit if you're into that sort of thing.
If you're camping at Finchale Abbey just six miles away - itself a cracking spot near Durham - this works as a half-day outing. Not a screaming kids' attraction, mind you. Birdwatchers and anyone who actually enjoys standing around looking at nature will get proper value. Everyone else will be restless within an hour.
