WW2 RAF Treleaver GCI (Ground Controlled Intercept) / Cold War ROTOR Radar Station (site of)

The concrete foundations and scattered remains on this Cornish hilltop tell a story most visitors to the area walk straight past. During World War Two, this was a RAF Ground Controlled Intercept station - the nerve centre where operators guided British fighters onto incoming German aircraft using nothing but radio and radar blips on a screen. Later, it became part of ROTOR, the Cold War's vast underground radar network designed to spot Soviet bombers before they reached British airspace.

There's not much left to see, to be honest. A few concrete pads, some overgrown trenches, and if you're lucky, the odd bit of rusted metal poking through the grass. But that's precisely what makes it compelling. Stand here and you're standing where people made life-and-death decisions in real time - vectoring Spitfires and Hurricanes into the night sky, or later, watching for a threat that thankfully never came. The views across the Cornish landscape are decent too.

History buffs and Cold War enthusiasts will find this worthwhile. Families with young children might struggle unless they're the type keen on wartime stories. It's free to visit and takes maybe 20 minutes to wander round properly. Best in clear weather when the views actually justify the walk. The nearby holiday parks - The Secret Garden Glamping and Henry's Camp Site - both make decent bases if you're exploring Cornwall's military heritage alongside the usual coastal attractions.
