WW1 Practice Trenches

Just outside Conwy, a stretch of land holds the actual training trenches where British soldiers drilled before being shipped out to the Somme and Flanders. They're still visible - proper lines carved into the earth, remarkably intact after a century. You walk along what was once a communication trench, duck under the parapets, get a real sense of how cramped and mud-heavy it all was. Not glamorous. Not meant to be.

This isn't a polished museum experience. There are no interpretive boards or reconstructed dugouts - just the archaeology itself. That's either brilliant or disappointing depending on what you want. History types will find it genuinely moving, the kind of place that makes the casualty figures suddenly concrete. Kids might need a bit of imagination to get excited; after twenty minutes of peering into trenches, younger ones tend to lose interest. Families with teenagers into military history, though, will find it sobering and worthwhile.

Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're really absorbing it. Wear proper boots; it gets boggy. The site works well as a stop between the holiday parks scattered around Golden Sands and Ty Mawr - only a few miles away - on a day when the Welsh weather isn't doing its worst. Winter's actually decent for visiting; fewer tourists and the bare landscape suits the subject matter.
