Worts Meadow

A short bus ride east of Cambridge takes you to Worts Meadow, a proper nature reserve that feels surprisingly wild for somewhere so close to the city. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no crowds, just reed beds, open water, and the constant flutter of birds overhead.

The meadow itself is modest in size but dense with life. Spend an hour walking the paths and you'll spot terns diving for fish, reed warblers nesting in the dense vegetation, and if you're lucky, a bittern booming from deep in the reeds. It's the sort of spot where binoculars feel essential - bring them or you'll regret it. The viewing areas are straightforward, wooden platforms that let you get close without disturbing anything.

This appeals most to keen birders and nature photographers rather than casual visitors. Families with young children might find it a bit quiet - there's not much to do once you've done the walk, and patience is required if you want to see anything memorable. But if you're staying at Roseberry Tourist Park just down the road, it's a genuinely worthwhile morning trip.

Timing matters here. Early morning, particularly spring and autumn, gives you the best sightings. Summer can be humid and buggy. Access appears free, though facilities are minimal - no café, no toilets that I could find. Come prepared with water and decent footwear.
