World War I and II

The World War I and II site near Burton-on-Trent is a serious bit of British military history, spread across grounds that demand a proper half-day to do it justice. You're walking through actual barracks, reconstructed trenches, and exhibition spaces that pull no punches about what happened in those two conflicts. It's not a theme park - there's no theatrical flourish here, just straightforward storytelling through buildings, photographs, and artefacts that speak for themselves.

History buffs will be completely absorbed. Families with teenagers tend to get more from it than younger kids, though if your family has a genuine interest in the wars, even primary-age children can handle it. The outdoor elements - the trench reconstructions especially - give you something physical to engage with rather than just reading labels behind glass.

The site works well if you're basing yourself at Kingfisher Holiday Park, which is only a couple of miles down the road. You could easily combine it with a morning walk along the Trent or a visit to Burton itself if you're after a change of pace. The town has decent pubs and a decent brewery tour if you fancy something lighter afterwards.

Bring waterproofs - the grounds are exposed and muddy after rain. Allow three to four hours minimum if you want to read properly rather than skim. It's the sort of place that sticks with you rather than one you'll be chatting about as a "lovely day out", but that's rather the point.
