Working Sheepdogs

You'll find yourself watching genuine working dogs do what they've been bred for centuries to do - herding sheep across the Scottish hills. This isn't a theme park attraction with pens and schedules printed on a laminate. It's the real thing, often visible from roadsides around Aviemore and the wider Highlands, where shepherds still use Border Collies and other working breeds to manage flocks across vast moorland.

What you actually see depends on timing and luck. Sometimes you'll catch a shepherd moving sheep between fields, the dogs working in silent partnership with their handler - it's hypnotic to watch if you've got the patience to stop the car and observe for ten minutes. Other times you're just looking at sheep doing sheep things, which is considerably less exciting.

This appeals most to people who care about rural life and how things actually work in the Highlands - not Instagram visitors after a five-minute photo.
