Wootton Plantation

The woodland at Wootton feels proper remote despite being just outside Minehead. You're walking through dense conifer plantation - all straight rows and quiet paths - which sounds a bit regimented on paper but actually creates this oddly peaceful atmosphere. The trees block out most of the sky, and after ten minutes you forget you're near a seaside town at all.

It's the sort of place walkers will appreciate more than casual strollers. Expect muddy tracks, uneven ground, and the occasional fallen branch across the path. The forest isn't wildly beautiful by Exmoor standards, but it's free, accessible, and genuinely quiet. You can knock out a decent couple of hours here without seeing another soul, which has its own appeal.

There's no facilities to speak of - no visitor centre, no cafe, no marked trails that I could find - so come prepared. Trainers with grip are essential, especially after rain. Best visited on a clear day when the woodland floor isn't a bog. Allow two to three hours if you're properly exploring, less if you just fancy a quick stomp about.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is closest at 2.4 miles, or Hoburne Blue Anchor if you're staying further east - this works as a wet-weather option or a quieter alternative to the busier Exmoor walks. Don't come expecting manicured woodland or Instagram moments. Come for the solitude.
