Wool Pond

There's a modest lake just outside Petersfield that doesn't shout about itself, which is rather the point. Wool Pond sits quietly, the sort of place locals actually use instead of Instagram-spotting tourists. The water's clean enough for swimming if you're brave (and British enough), and there's decent walking around the perimeter if you're not keen on a dip.

It's the kind of spot families with young kids will genuinely enjoy for an afternoon rather than tolerate for twenty minutes. You can throw a ball around, let them run off steam by the water's edge, maybe spot some waterfowl if you're patient. The walk isn't arduous - maybe forty minutes if you're dawdling - and the paths are manageable even with a pushchair, though they can get muddy after rain.

Historically it's a working pond, not some grand estate lake with a visitor centre and gift shop. That's its charm, really. You won't find crowds or queues. On a decent day it's properly peaceful.

If you're based at Woodlands Camping just down the road - and it's only 5.6 miles away - this makes for an easy morning or late afternoon detour. Pack a picnic, bring the dog if you've got one, and don't expect anything fancy. Just a functional, pleasant bit of Hampshire that works as part of a camping holiday without needing to be the main event. Worth combining with a walk into Petersfield itself, which has proper shops and decent lunch options.
