Chappetts Copse

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Chappetts Copse sits just outside Petersfield and offers exactly what you'd expect from a Hampshire forest - mixed broadleaf and conifer, decent paths, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you drove here instead of staying in town.

It's manageable terrain for families with older kids, though the paths can get muddy even days after rain. An hour to ninety minutes covers it comfortably, depending on how slowly you move. There's nothing dramatic about it - no viewpoint, no ancient monument - but that's rather the point. You're here for the walk itself: the light through the canopy, the stillness, a genuine escape from the A3 roar that's never far away.

Historically inclined visitors won't find much to sink their teeth into. It's a working forest, managed for timber, not a nature reserve with interpretive boards. Birders might do better in spring, though you'll need decent binoculars and patience.

The real value emerges when you're based at one of the nearby parks - Cedar Valley is closest at just 1.5 miles, while Woodlands Camping (3.7 miles) offers more space if you need it. A morning's stroll here makes sense before heading into Petersfield itself or pushing on to somewhere with more obvious attractions. Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's no formal visitor infrastructure.
