Woodcocks Ley

The walk up Woodcocks Ley from Minehead is one of those climbs that feels properly rewarding once you're stood on top. It's not the highest point in the area, but the views down toward the coast justify the effort - you can see clear across to Wales on a decent day, and the Bristol Channel spreads out below like something from an OS map.

This is moorland walking, so expect open ground, wind, and the kind of visibility that makes you feel like you're actually getting somewhere. The ascent takes about 45 minutes from the town depending on your fitness and the route you pick. Bring decent boots if it's been wet - the terrain gets boggy.

Walkers will get far more out of this than casual strollers, though it's not a technical scramble or anything. If you're staying at Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, it's a solid half-day excursion that won't eat your entire morning. On a grey day it's a bit grim, but in clear conditions with good light it's worth the trek.

The moorland itself is fairly exposed, so avoid it in poor weather. Late spring through early autumn is your window for the best conditions and longest daylight. No facilities on the summit, so come prepared with water and a packed lunch if you're thinking of sitting up there for a bit. It's a proper walk, not a stroll, but that's exactly what makes it worth doing.
