Woodcock Covert

Woodcock Covert is a proper woodland walk just outside Watlington in Oxfordshire - the kind of place locals know about but visitors often miss. It's a mixed forest with decent paths threading through beech and oak, good for a solid hour's ramble or a quick leg-stretch if you're based at one of the nearby campsites like White Mark Glamping or Bridge Villa.

The main draw is simply being under the trees without fighting crowds. Bird watchers will appreciate it - the name gives it away - and the woodland floor is thick enough that you feel genuinely away from things, even though you're only a few miles from Watlington town centre. Dogs handle it well, and it's flat enough for families with younger kids, though wellies are advisable after rain as the paths get properly boggy.

You can walk this in under an hour if you're just after fresh air and birdsong, or spend longer if you're the type to potter about identifying trees. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared - water, maybe a packed lunch if you're making an afternoon of it.

It slots nicely into a Chilterns walking break. Pair it with a stay at Ridgeway View Campsite (6.3 miles away) and you've got a proper base for exploring the wider area. Honestly, it's not a destination on its own, but if you're in the region it's well worth twenty minutes to find the entrance and stretch your legs properly under cover.
