Woodbank Park

The wetland walks at Woodbank Park draw you in straightaway - boardwalks threading through reedbeds where you'll spot water voles if you're lucky, and the air thick with dragonflies come summer. It's a proper nature reserve rather than a manicured park, which means muddy paths, real wildlife, and the kind of quiet that makes you forget Macclesfield's just down the road.

You're looking at roughly an hour to two hours depending on which trails you fancy. Families with young kids will manage the shorter loops without complaint, though pushchairs can be tricky on the muddier sections. Serious birdwatchers bring binoculars and settle in for the morning - the variety here is genuinely decent for Cheshire. Photographers love the light filtering through the trees in early morning.

It's free to access, which is a real bonus. Spring and early summer are cracking times to visit when breeding birds are active and the wetland's at its liveliest. Winter's quieter but if you like solitude, that's when you'll get it.

Based at Eastwood End Caravan Park just six miles away, Woodbank makes an excellent morning outing before heading to bigger attractions in the area. It won't take all day, but it's exactly the sort of stop that rounds out a proper holiday - get some fresh air, stretch your legs, maybe spot something you weren't expecting. Low-key but rewarding.
