Witton Heath

You'll find Witton Heath tucked east of North Walsham, a proper Norfolk woodland that makes for a straightforward afternoon walk if you're based at one of the local caravan parks. It's not dramatic stuff - no towering pines or theatrical vistas - but it's the kind of place where you can actually breathe and stretch your legs without crowds.

The forest floor is decent for walking, with paths that meander through mixed woodland. You're looking at typical East Anglian scrub and trees rather than wild mountain terrain, which suits families with younger kids perfectly. The walk takes as long as you want it to - an hour's enough to feel like you've properly got away from it all, or you can make an afternoon of it if you're the type who enjoys spotting birds and picking out tree species.

If you're staying at Two Mills Touring Park just down the road, this is genuinely worth popping over to. It breaks up a caravan holiday nicely without requiring any real planning. North Walsham itself is close enough for supplies and a decent café, so you're never far from civilisation.

It's free, as far as I can tell, and there's no faffing about with opening hours or booking. Just turn up. The main thing to know is that it's modest rather than spectacular - don't expect the New Forest experience. But for a Norfolk weekend away, it does exactly what it should.
