Wittaburrow Cairn

You're out on Dartmoor when you stumble across Wittaburrow - a Bronze Age cairn that's been sitting on this moor for roughly 4,000 years. It's not much to look at if you're honest: a modest pile of stones that most people would walk straight past. But that's rather the appeal. There's something proper about seeing an actual prehistoric burial monument without the crowds or the heritage centre gift shop.

The cairn sits in wild moorland, and the walk to reach it from South Brent is genuinely peaceful - you're looking at moorland stretching in all directions, and on a clear day you get that sense of scale that makes you understand why Bronze Age folk chose to mark their important burial sites here. The landscape hasn't changed that much.

It's a walker's draw rather than a family afternoon out. Kids will be bored within minutes unless they're genuinely into archaeology. Allow an hour if you're making a proper trip of it, including the walk in and around the site. Bring decent boots - the moorland can be boggy depending on weather.

The real value is using Wittaburrow as part of a larger Dartmoor exploration. It works brilliantly as a stop on a walking route between other sites, and Dartmoor National Park at 5.8 miles away has plenty of holiday park accommodation if you're basing yourself here for a few days. Go when the weather's reasonable - this isn't a drive-and-look sort of place.
