Witley Ponds

Two connected lakes sitting quietly on the edge of Guildford offer a proper escape without the crowds you'd expect this close to Surrey commuter country. Witley Ponds is the sort of place where you actually see what you came for - water reflections, woodland, the occasional heron doing its slow-motion fishing routine.

The walking circuit around both ponds takes a solid hour at a decent pace, maybe ninety minutes if you're stopping to watch birds or just standing about. It's flat and accessible, which means it works equally well for families with young kids and older walkers who aren't keen on hills. The water is clear enough to be interesting without being dramatic, and the tree cover keeps things cool even on warm days.

This isn't a destination unto itself, frankly. But if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - the Glamping Holiday site is barely six miles away - it's an excellent morning walk before heading into Guildford proper. Pair it with a café stop in town and you've got a solid half-day sorted. Early morning is genuinely the best time; the light's better, there are fewer dog walkers, and you might actually spot something worth photographing.

The main draw is simplicity itself: a quiet water and woodland walk when you need air and movement but can't be bothered with moorland or serious trail difficulty. Don't expect facilities beyond car parking. Free to visit.
