Withycombe Shade

A dense woodland walk through ancient forest just outside Lyndhurst - this is proper New Forest territory, where the trees crowd in and you lose track of time within minutes. Withycombe Shade is less about views and more about atmosphere. You're walking under a canopy of oak and beech, with the forest floor soft underfoot, and it genuinely feels removed from the world despite being minutes from the main village.

It's brilliant for families who want something less manicured than the usual forest attraction. Kids can scramble about on roots and fallen logs without worrying about straying off path - the woodland itself keeps you boxed in naturally. If you're after a long ramble or serious hiking, you might find it a bit limited; allow maybe 45 minutes to an hour to really soak it in without rushing. Walkers love this stretch because it connects well with the broader New Forest network - you can easily tack on longer loops if you've got the legs for it.

Historically types might find it interesting as a slice of the forest that's been relatively untouched for centuries, though there are no marked monuments or visitor infrastructure here. Free to access, no visitor centre, no cafés. That's actually its charm - you turn up, park sensibly somewhere nearby, and walk. Black Knowl Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite sits about 5 miles away, making this a solid option if you're based there for a park holiday in the New Forest. Spring's the best time - bluebells come alive and the light through the leaves is properly lovely.
