Wintons Fishery

The lake itself is modest - a proper working fishery rather than a show-off attraction - but that's rather the point. You'll find Wintons Fishery just outside Hassocks, a quiet stretch of water where anglers sink their lines and the main sound is water lapping against the bank. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which feels rarer by the year.

If you're after a peaceful hour or two, it works nicely. The water is clear enough on a decent day, and there's something settling about watching a float bob gently on the surface. It's not a destination in itself - you won't spend half a day here - but as a diversion during a park holiday in the area, it takes the edge off. Families with young kids might find it dull unless they're the fishing type. Walkers doing a route through the Sussex countryside will appreciate the quiet spot to pause.

The fishery operates on an informal basis, so it pays to check locally for access arrangements before you head over. It's free to walk around and look, though obviously anglers will need proper permission to fish.

If you're camping at Blacklands Farm or Wild Boar Wood - both excellent sites within six miles - this makes a natural detour on a walk rather than a planned outing. Don't expect facilities or crowds. Just expect water, trees, and the kind of stillness that's worth driving out to Sussex for.
