Wintersett Reservoir

The water here is genuinely peaceful - a proper surprise if you're expecting moorland and mill towns. Wintersett Reservoir sits just outside Wakefield like a secret, drawing locals and the occasional lost tourist who've stumbled off the main roads. It's a working reservoir, so don't expect theme park thrills; you get walking trails around the perimeter, bird spotting if you're patient, and the kind of calm that makes you understand why people move to the countryside.

The walk itself takes a couple of hours if you fancy the full circuit. The path is flat and well-maintained, manageable for families with younger kids, though buggies can be awkward in places. Bring binoculars. The reservoir attracts coots, mallards, and if you're lucky, grebes - proper birders get genuinely excited here, which tells you something about the place.

Free to visit, no barriers or gates. Best in spring or autumn when the weather's not trying to kill you and the light's actually worth the walk. Summer brings too many families with portable speakers, if I'm honest.

If you're staying at Nostell Priory Holiday Park or Broadlands Farm, this makes an easy half-day outing. It's not going to be the highlight of your week, but it's the sort of place that stays with you - somewhere people actually use rather than just photograph. A bit of Yorkshire doing what Yorkshire does best: solid, unpretentious, proper.
